・生息地：北アメリカ （Habitat:North America ）
・時代：ジュラ紀 約1億5,500万〜1億5,000万年前 （Epoch:Jurassic period, approximately 155 to 150 million years ago )
・食性：植物食 （Diet:herbivore）
前脚が後脚よりも低いので、背中が斜めになっていて前傾姿勢だったようです。なのでより頭は地面の近くに位置し、地面の低いところにある植物を食べていたようですね。
(Since its forelimbs were shorter than its hind limbs, its back was sloped and it likely had a forward-leaning posture. This meant its head was positioned closer to the ground, allowing it to feed on low-lying vegetation.)
👀特徴（Feature）
・背中の板：大きな骨の板が背中に2列並んでいるのが最大の特徴です。背中の板の数は17枚程度で、左右交互に並んでいたとされています。目的は①体温調節（血流によって熱を放出・吸収）➁防御（捕食者への威嚇）➂種内ディスプレイ（異性へのアピール）であったようです。 （Back Plates:The most distinctive feature is the large bony plates arranged in two rows along the back. There were approximately 17 plates, and they are believed to have been arranged alternately on either side. The purposes of these plates are thought to has been:①Intraspecific display (attracting mates) ➁Thermoregulation (releasing or absorbing heat through blood flow)➂Defense (intimidating predators))
・尻尾のトゲ（スパイク）：尻尾の先に4本の鋭いスパイクがあります。これを使って捕食者と勇敢に戦っていたんですね。この尻尾のスパイクのことを「サグマイザー」というらしいですよ。
（Tail Spikes:There are four sharp spikes at the end of the tail. These were used bravely in fights against predators. These tail spikes are known as a thagomizer.）
・脳のサイズ：体の大きさに比べて脳は非常に小さくてクルミほどの大きさしかなかったらしいです。昔は第二の脳（副脳）が尻尾の近くにあったという説もあったようですが、今は否定されてますね。 （Brain Size:Compared to its large body, the brain was extremely small—about the size of a walnut. In the past, there was a theory that it had a “second brain” near the tail, but that idea has since been dismissed.）
ステゴサウルスといったらなんといっても格好いい背中の板版ですよね。この板版、「左右対称だったのか？左右非対称でジグザグだったのか？」となんと100年以上も論争が続いたらしいですよ。凄い執念ですよねー。
（When it comes to Stegosaurus, its cool back plates are definitely the most iconic feature. Believe it or not, there was a debate that lasted over 100 years about whether the plates were symmetrical or arranged in a zigzag, asymmetrical pattern. That’s some serious dedication!）
🏃♀️走る速さ：推定走行速度（Running speed ：estimated running speed）
ステゴサウルスの走行スピードは時速約6〜7km程度、かなり頑張っても時速10kmが限界なようです。これは人間で言うと早歩き位のスピードです。追いかけられても人間が走れば十分逃げられますね。やはり前脚が短くて前傾姿勢なのが速く走れない原因で、ディプロドクスと同じですね。 （The Stegosaurus could move at about 6 to 7 km/h, with a maximum speed of around 10 km/h even at its best. That’s roughly the speed of a fast walk for a human. So if one were being chased, a person could easily escape just by running. Its short front legs and forward-leaning posture made it difficult to run fast—similar to the Diplodocus.）
ステゴサウルスは逃げるスピードが極端に遅いので、敵に襲われたときは戦うしか選択肢がなかったみたいですね。なんとも潔い感じですね。勇敢といっていいのか…脳がクルミほどだから他に方法を考えられないのか…どっちなんだい❕❕
（Because Stegosaurus was extremely slow at escaping, it seems that fighting was its only option when attacked. There’s something kind of admirable about that. Was it bravery… or was it just that, with a brain the size of a walnut, it couldn’t come up with any other plan? Which is it!?）
💡ステゴサウルスの起源と進化（Origin and Evolution of the Stegosaurus）
ステゴサウルスの祖先に近いとされているのが中国で見つかっているフワンゴサウルス。剣竜（装盾類）の中でも最古と言われています。フワンゴサウルスは小型で背板や尾のスパイクも少なかったようです。時代が進むにつれて、背板が大型化し、尾の武装が進化していったようですね。ステゴサウルスはその剣竜進化の「完成形」なんです。 （A dinosaur considered close to the ancestor of Stegosaurus is Huayangosaurus, which was discovered in China. It is said to be the oldest known member of the stegosaur (thyreophoran) group. Huayangosaurus was small and had fewer back plates and tail spikes. Over time, these features evolved—back plates became larger, and tail weaponry became more developed. Stegosaurus represents the “final form” of this stegosaur evolution.）
ステゴサウルスはジュラ紀終わりにむけてその姿は少なくなっていたと言われています。白亜紀に入るとより防御力の高いアンキロサウルスやトリケラトプスが台頭してきたんですね。戦う草食恐竜に時代が流れていく中で、ステゴサウルスは進化が止まり淘汰されてしまったも考えられているようですね😫
（It’s believed that Stegosaurus had already started to decline toward the end of the Jurassic period. As the Cretaceous period began, more heavily armored herbivores like Ankylosaurus and Triceratops began to rise. As the age of “battle-ready” herbivorous dinosaurs advanced, it’s thought that Stegosaurus may have been outcompeted and ultimately phased out due to a lack of further evolutionary adaptation.😆）
💡草食恐竜の攻撃は尻尾が主流？（Was the Tail the Main Weapon of Herbivorous Dinosaurs?）
結論から言うと、尻尾は“主力武器”だったが、“全員が使っていた”わけではないということですね。皆さんもご存知、トリケラトプスは角が武器、パキケファロサウルスは堅い頭が武器、イグアノドンは前脚の親指が武器というように草食恐竜は様々な武器をお持ち。尻尾が武器なのはステゴサウルスを筆頭にアンキロサウルスやディプロドクスが有名ですね。 （To conclude, while the tail was a primary weapon for some herbivorous dinosaurs, it wasn’t used by all of them. As many of you may know, Triceratops used its horns as weapons, Pachycephalosaurus had a thick, domed head for headbutting, and Iguanodon had a sharp thumb spike on its front limbs. Herbivorous dinosaurs had a wide variety of weapons. When it comes to tail-based weaponry, Stegosaurus is the most famous, along with Ankylosaurus and Diplodocus.）
草食恐竜同士で戦ったらどの恐竜が最強なんですかね？こういうの考えちゃうの男のロマンってやつですかね。どちらにしても草食恐竜同士の戦いもしっかりあったようですね。でもそれは殺し合いということではなく、縄張り争いやオス同士がメスを巡ってという感じのようです。
（If herbivorous dinosaurs fought each other, which one would be the strongest? I guess wondering about things like this is part of that classic “boyhood dream,” right? In any case, it seems that battles between herbivorous dinosaurs did happen. But they weren’t deadly fights—more like territorial disputes or males competing for mates.）
